We were joined back on the Popternative show by Brianne Tju (I Know What You Did Last Summer, Gone in the Night) who stars in the new Netflix sci-fi, dystopian film, Uglies, based on the popular 2005 book by Scott Westerfeld.
Uglies also stars Joey King (A Family Affair, We Were the Lucky Ones), Chase Stokes (Outer Banks, Tell Me Your Secrets), Keith Powers (Before I Fall, The Tomorrow War), Jan Luis Castellanos (13 Reasons Why, Tall Girl 2), Charmin Lee (The 5th Wave, Palmer), and Laverne Cox (Inventing Anna, Orange Is the New Black).
Directed by McG (Family Switch, The Babysitter: Killer Queen), the films takes place in a futuristic world that imposes a cosmetic surgery at 16. Tally (King) is eager for her turn to join the rest of society, but when Shay (Tju) runs away, she embarks on a journey to save her that upends everything she thought she wanted and knew about society.
The novel is one Brianne was already familiar with prior to being cast in the film: “I’m very happy with the outcome, I think it’s wonderful. My favorite part from when I read the book as a kid is I remember the field of white flowers that Tally wakes up in during her journey, and to see that come to life with Joey [King] is surreal.”

Brianne also tells us about using the source material to prepare for her role in addition to important conversations on set:
“There are some scenes and details straight from the book, so that helped a little bit having that base of knowledge. On top of that, the writing was great and you could really visualize what they wanted, and also talking to McG and our [cinematographer], and letting them paint the world for us was really cool.”
