Peacock today dropped the official trailer (below) and key art for the upcoming dark comedy thriller, Based on a True Story, created by Craig Rosenberg (The Boys, Peacher) and Jason Bateman (Air, Ozark). All 8 episodes will premiere on the streaming platform on Thursday, June 8 starring Kaley Cuoco (The Flight Attendant, The Big Bang Theory), Chris Messina (Air, I Care A Lot), Tom Bateman (Thirteen Lives, Behind Her Eyes), Priscilla Quintana (Good Trouble, Pandora), Liana Liberato (Scream VI, Light As a Feather), Natalia Dyer (Stranger Things, Yes, God, Yes), Alex Alomar Akpobome (Industry, Twenties), Aisha Alfa (Good Trouble, Sorry For Your Loss), Annabelle Dexter-Jones (Succession, Under the Silver Lake), and Li Jun Li (Babylon, Sex/Life).
Peacock describes Based on a True Story as a dark comedic thriller “about a realtor, a former tennis star and a plumber who seize a unique opportunity to capitalize on America’s obsession with true crime.” Kaley Cuoco also serves as Executive Producer along with Craig Rosenberg, Jason Bateman, and Michael Costigan (Aggregate Films), Co-Executive Producers Roxie Rodriguez (Aggregate Films), and Melissa Blake, and with Alex Buono as Producer.
Over the last decade, a true crime phenomenon has swept over America. Podcasts, documentaries, fictional shows based on true stories – they dominate the culture. Murderers have become celebrities and celebrities have become murderers which inspired me to create this show.
I became fascinated with the idea of a relatable married couple whose youthful dreams hadn’t come to fruition and who saw the true crime tidal wave as an opportunity to change their lives and save their marriage. Our Los Angeles setting – the city where everybody wants to be famous – became a vivid backdrop to our story of fame, ambition, aspiration and murder.
