The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Officially Confirmed This Long-Standing Peach and Rosalina Theory

After nearly two decades since Nintendo’s critically acclaimed spacefaring game came out, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie finally gave fans the confirmation on one of the community’s most long-held theories.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie sees Mario, Luigi, Peach, and their friends banding together to rescue Rosalina after she is captured by Bowser’s son, Bowser Jr. Along the way, the group find themselves rescued by the Lumas after Fox McCloud’s ship goes down on a planet similar to Super Mario Odyssey’s Cascade Kingdom. From here, a few beats play out that lead to one shocking reveal in the franchise’s history.

Ever since the sequel’s announcement, fans and general audiences have been buzzing about a theory that’s been debated for years. This theory is in regards to Princess Peach and Rosalina, who have been theorized to be sisters. Although both characters share similar features, which includes blonde hair and blue eyes, their connection seemed to stop there.

However, the sequel confirms that Peach and Rosalina are sisters through the storybook, which was also an important aspect of the original Super Mario Galaxy game. In the film, it’s revealed that Peach and Rosalina lived together on a barren planet despite not having any parents. Furthermore, when they physically touched each other, they had enough power to create life on any planet.

The ending of Rosalina’s story in the film also clarifies Peach’s mysterious origin that was laid out in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Although it was kept secret as to how Peach ended up in the Mushroom Kingdom, this sequel reveals that Rosalina had to let go of Peach due to unseen forces hunting them down. It’s also unclear what these forces may be, but with a sequel already being set up, it could be any of Mario’s numerous enemies.

Although Nintendo confirmed this, other fans believed in a different theory that still saw a familial connection. Some believed that Peach was actually Rosalina’s daughter instead of her sister. This theory stems from Rosalina’s book in the original game, where it was stated that Rosalina traveled with her Lumas for a century. Fortunately, Nintendo seems to fully stand on what’s now a fact.

The theory that Rosalina and Peach are siblings began when the game’s development team behind it only played around with the idea, per the game’s PRIMA Official Game Guide. Additionally, the first game’s storybook also showed that Rosalina’s mother also had a similar hairstyle as Peach, but fans also believed that this was just an easter egg from the developers.

A different theory, which theorized Rosalina being Peach’s daughter, also gained traction thanks to a two-parter video from The Game Theorists YouTube channel. The first video dived deep into the clues from everything involving Rosalina while their second video seemed to question the entirety of the Super Mario Galaxy games. Both theories would hold on their own, but it wouldn’t be until 2023 when fans got the official hint from Mario and Peach’s conversation.

Rosalina’s Storybook

This sequel does confirm that the Nintendo Cinematic Universe’s versions of Rosalina and Peach are siblings, but whether that applies to the games’ versions as well remains up in the air. Given how popular the Illumination films are, it’s very likely that Nintendo may pivot to fully canonizing this detail in future installments.

However, what’s very certain for the future of the Mario animated movies is that Mario and friends will have to face more trouble. With the tease of Princess Daisy in the film’s second post-credits scene, fans could look forward to Peach, Rosalina, and Daisy interacting with each other in the third film.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is now playing in theaters.
