We were joined on the Popternative show by Moriah Brown (Power Book II: Ghost) to discuss her new film, The Six Triple Eight, written and directed by Tyler Perry (Sistas). After having its theatrical debut in early December, it premiered globally on Netflix on December 20.
Starring Kerry Washington (Scandal), The Six Triple Eight is inspired by the first and only Women’s Army Corps unit of color to serve overseas in WWII. Given an extraordinary mission and united in their determination, these unsung heroes delivered hope and shattered barriers.
“This was a story of women having to support and rely on each other, and so that goes back to how I felt with the women and my cast mates in this ensemble cast; we had to support each other, help each other understand our pace and the journey,” Moriah says.
In addition to Kerry Washington, the film’s large ensemble cast also includes Ebony Obsidian (Sistas), Milauna Jackson (A Jazzman’s Blues), Kylie Jefferson (Tiny Pretty Things), Shanice Shantay (Perfect Harmony), Sarah Jeffery (Charmed), Pepi Sonuga (Pam & Tommy), Jeanté Godlock (Daybreak), Jay Reeves (All American), Jeffery Johnson (Bird of Paradise), Baadja-Lyne Odums (Ruthless), Donna Biscoe (The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat), Gregg Sulkin (Runaways), Scott Daniel Johnson (Found), Susan Sarandon (Thelma & Louise), with Dean Norris (Breaking Bad), Sam Waterston (Law & Order), and Oprah Winfrey (Greenleaf).

On working with such a large cast, Moriah says, “It was quick, that’s the thing, when you have an ensemble cast, especially when you’re all in the same scenes together, everybody has a line, so you gotta kind of be on the same chemistry, be on the same page. But that goes back to the original, actual story of the six triple eight women, they all had to be on the same page, they were together on this tumultuous journey to get where they had to get. They were the first women of color ever recorded in history to go overseas to serve for their country.”
