We were joined on the Popternative show by South African actress Marié Botha to discuss her role as Magpie in The Penguin. The HBO Original limited series from DC Studios continues The Batman epic crime saga that filmmaker Matt Reeves started with The Batman and centers on the character played by Colin Farrell in the film.
The cast also includes Cristin Milioti (Palm Springs), Rhenzy Feliz (Marvel’s Runaways), Michael Kelly (Special Ops: Lioness), Shohreh Aghdashloo (The Expanse), Deirdre O’Connell (Outer Range), Clancy Brown (Billions), and Michael Zegen (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel).
The Penguin premiered on September 19th, and Marié appeared in episode 4 as a lead guest, which debuted on October 13. “With the DC Universe, they don’t really give you much when you’re auditioning. So I didn’t have much to work with. But I had auditioned for an earlier character for the show, so I felt familiar with the writing a little bit, and then also excited they called me back for this character,” Marié tells us about her audition process.

On how she prepared to play Magpie, she explains: “I went to a comic book store as soon as I got the part, and the ones I couldn’t find with her in them I ordered on eBay. I immediately was doing research in that vein and drawing my favorite villains.”
Marié also tells us about what it was like filming her episode, working with the cast, and more. Watch the full conversation below.
