The new historcal drama miniseries, The Gray House, from Executie Poducers Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman premiered on Prime Video on February 26 and tells untold true story of women who helped the Union win the Civil War.
We were joined on the Popternative show by series stars Mary-Louise Parker (The Institute, Weeds), Daisy Head (Shadow and Bone, Harlots), Christopher McDonald (Hacks, Happy Gilmore), and Hannah James (Mercy Street, Supergirl).
The Gray House follows a Virginia socialite, her unstoppable mother, a once-enslaved confidante, and Richmond’s notorious courtesan. The four women transform the Underground Railroad mission into an efficient spy network, risking everything to protect the nation’s future and uphold American democracy.
The series also stars Amethyst Davis (Kindred, Kinfolk: The Series), Paul Anderson (Peaky Blinders, The Revenant), Ben Vereen (Sneaky Pete, All That Jazz), Robert Knepper (Prison Break, Hitman), Ian Duff (Judas and the Black Messiah, We Own This City), Rob Morrow (Billions, Northern Exposure), and Colin O’Donoghue (Once Upon a Time, The Rite),
Although the series is set in 1860s Virgina, it was actually filmed in Romania. “I think one of the reasons they shot it in Romania is because there are so many long stretches of land without telephone wire and connectivity. So, it’s kind of interesting even just driving to set and seeing all this green that looked quite like Virginia. My mother was from that area, and that kind of set the whole scene in a great way,” Mary-Louise Parker explains.
Daisy Head shares that getting to portray real figures inspires her to honor their stories, especially with often overlooked ones: “I mean, the fact that this is inspired by a true story, that immediately makes me want to do it even more justice. I want to do all of the characters that I portray justice, but this especially because they were humans that existed and were seeking freedom in the way that they did. And it is a remarkable piece of kind of unknown history.”
