Netflix today dropped first look photos from the upcoming coming-of-age dramedy, Don’t Say Good Luck, starring Sunny Sandler (You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, Kinda Pregnant) as Sophie Birenbaum who is hoping to lead in her high school musical. She soon finds out that she’s living with even more drama at home than on the stage.
Streaming August 14, Sandler leads an ensemble cast inculding Melanie Lynskey (The Last of Us, Yellowjackets), Max Greenfield (Running Point, New Girl), Jack Champion (Avatar: Fire and Ash, Scream VI), Stephanie Beatriz (Hazbin Hotel, Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Scarlett Estevez (Lucifer, Daddy’s Home), Jon Lovitz (The Benchwarmers, Satuday Night Live), Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire, Fargo), Emma McNulty (FBI: Most Wanted), Elyse Bell, and Bebe Neuwirth (Julia, Cheers).
Directed by Julia Hart (I’m Your Woman, Miss Stevens), the film is written by Laura Hankin and Julia Hart, and Jordan Horowitz and is based on Hankin’s real-life story. “It’s based on Laura’s own real-life story of when she got the lead in her high school musical at the same time that her mom’s cancer came back. Because it was so deeply personal and specific, it just feels so real. Even if it’s not exactly their story, people can feel connected to it,” Hart tells Tudum.
“The whole point of the movie is that Sophie learns how to work through the difficult things in life and channel her emotions through art. It’s a reminder of the power of art. She made something that gave us all such a beautiful community and lifelong friends,” Hart adds.
