Stranger Things Season 5 is finally here, and Volume 1’s debut on November 26 delivered just what fans were hoping for: lots of action, plot twists, new character developments, and hilarious scenes. Among the many standout moments, one scene in particular has made its rounds on social media in the form of memes: the chaotic and hilarious dinner scene at the Turnbow house in Episode 3.
In an attempt to protect Derek Turnbow (played by Jake Connelly) from being Vecna’s next victim, the group devises a plan to get Erica Sinclair (played by Priah Ferguson) into the Turnbow house since she is, or, at least used to be, friends with Derek’s sister, Tina, played by Caroline Elle Abrams.
Erica finds herself orchestrating an impromptu covert operation at the Turnbow family table. With sedative-laced pie knocking out everyone except Tina, who refuses to eat it, Erica is forced to improvise, leading to the now-infamous syringe moment that viewers can’t stop quoting, clipping, and memeing. During our conversation, Caroline says she is very aware of all the memes:
“The memes, I love the memes, they’re my favorite thing. They’re so funny. But I think what’s even more popular than the pie [emoji] is this one meme of Tina and Erica and Tina’s face is covered and it’s Erica stabbing me [with the syringe] and it has the quote “eat your damn pie” and that has flooded my comments, it’s funny.”
“The pie scene took either one or two days [to film] and it was so fun. I think that’s what made it so good because me and Priah [Ferguson] and Jake [Connelly] and the actors who played my parents were having so much fun, genuinely,” she adds.
While not much was known about Tina’s character before she went into filming, Caroline learned more about her once they shot the scenes: “I realized how serious Tina is. I think she takes this incident with Erica very seriously as a 13 year-old girl would, and the director gave me a pointer to be a little more serious, because it’s so true; I remember being 13 and I took everything very dramatically.”

Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 1 is now streaming on Netflix. Volume 2 will debut on Christmas Day, and the finale episode on New Year’s Eve.
