Sony Pictures’ upcoming supernatural horror thriller The Pope’s Exorcist, which is Based on true events, and starring Russell Crowe will be released exclusively in theaters on Friday, April 14th, 2023. Sony today dropped a new featurette of the film filled with new scenes and a description from Crowe himself (below).

Inspired by the actual files of Father Gabriele Amorth, Chief Exorcist of the Vatican (Academy Award winner Russell Crowe), the film follows Amorth as he investigates a young boy’s terrifying possession and ends up uncovering a centuries-old conspiracy the Vatican has desperately tried to keep hidden.

The script is based on the books An Exorcist Tells His Story (1990) and An Exorcist: More Stories (1992) by Father Gabriele Amorth. Directed by Julius Avery (Samaritan, Overlord), the film also stars Daniel Zovatto (Station Eleven, It Follows), Alex Essoe (Midnight Mass, The Haunting of Bly Manor), and Franco Nero (John Wick: Chapter 2, Django Unchained). Producers include Doug Belgrad (Bad Boys for Life, Zombieland: Double Tap), Michael Patrick Kaczmarek (40, Rocked), and Jeff Katz (Snakes on a Plane, Shoot ‘Em Up).

It was also released that The Pope’s Exorcist has been rated R by the Motion Picture Association due to violent content, language, sexual references, and some nudity in the film.
