We were joined on the Popternative show by Enzo Vogrincic who can be seen portraying Numa Turcatti in the Oscar-nominated film, Society of the Snow. The film premiered on Netflix January 4th, 2024 and is based on the book of the same title by Pablo Vierci. Netflix revealed it amassed 51 million views and was the #1 non-English film on the platform for the first 2 weeks in a row.
Society of the Snow tells the true story of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 chartered to fly a rugby team to Chile in 1972 that crashes on a glacier in the heart of the Andes Mountains. Only 29 of its 45 passengers survived the accident, leaving them trapped in one of the most hostile and inaccessible environments on the planet, resulting in having to resort to extreme measures to stay alive. Directed by J.A. Bayona (The Impossible, The Orphanage), Society of the Snow is nominated for Best International Feature Film and Best Makeup and Hairstyling for the 2024 Academy Awards, taking place on March 10th, 2024.
When discussing balancing the physical and emotional components of the film, Enzo says, “The advantage with the physical part is that it was there, it was real, the snow was there, the hunger was ever present. The emotional part was the real challenge because this is such a hard to believe story. Both those things complement each other, and the physical aspect helped [me] to focus to find the emotional [aspects]. So all my preparation was for the psychological aspect – to really think, how did this character think though this?”
