We were joined on the Popternative show by Blas Polidori who can be seen portraying Gustavo ‘Coco’ Nicolich in the Oscar-nominated film, Society of the Snow. The film premiered on Netflix January 4th, 2024 and is based on the book of the same title by Pablo Vierci. Netflix revealed it amassed 51 million views and was the #1 non-English film on the platform for the first 2 weeks in a row.
Society of the Snow tells the true story of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 chartered to fly a rugby team to Chile in 1972 that crashes on a glacier in the heart of the Andes Mountains. Only 29 of its 45 passengers survived the accident, leaving them trapped in one of the most hostile and inaccessible environments on the planet, resulting in having to resort to extreme measures to stay alive.
Directed by J.A. Bayona (The Impossible, The Orphanage), Society of the Snow is nominated for Best International Feature Film and Best Makeup and Hairstyling for the 2024 Academy Awards, taking place on March 10th, 2024.

When discussing his specific role, Blas says: “It was so special. We all had the opportunity to talk to the survivors and the families, and I had the opportunity to talk to the brother of Coco, and it was so emotional. Coco has that letter that is a few pages where he talks to his family, his girlfriend. That is so rich for an actor to have that research, the letters that are so intimate, so private. It was so emotional to have the privilege to play that character and to celebrate his memory.”
