The Canadian medical drama series SkyMed is back with a brand new season, following medics and pilots as they fly air ambulances across remote Northern Canada. Packed with new adventures and gripping storylines, Season 4 dives deeper into the physical and emotional toll of the their jobs. Season 4 premiered on May 21 on Paramount+ with all 8 episodes, and stars Natasha Calis (Nurses), Morgan Holmstrom (Day of the Dead), Praneet Akilla (Motherland: Fort Salem), “Ace” Aayush Turner (There’s Someone Inside Your House), Mercedes Morris (Slasher), Aaron Ashmore (Locke & Key), Thomas Elms (The Order), Kheon Clarke (Private Princess Christmas), and Sydney Kuhne (Ginny & Georgia).

We spoke with Natasha Calis and Morgan Holmstrom who return to Season 4 of SkyMed as flight nurses Hayley and Crystal. When it comes to playing Crystal for a fourth season, Holmstrom is still learning about her character: “I think I was still learning aspects of Crystal for Season 4. I think Season 3 was quite emotional for her [along] with grief and loss. I think going into Season 4, it was [about] navigating what [life] looks like after grief, what it means for her to [try and] move on and find her own purpose, and understand what really drives her in her own life. So, I think that’s what I was trying to work with for this season.”

“I think at this point I’m so comfortable with the character and with the show that it comes very naturally. I think my favorite thing to prep for would be the medical procedures. It’s always fascinating when the medical consultant comes in and they’re like, okay we’re doing cryotherapy today, strap in. And I learn this entire sequence while also spewing medical jargon the entire time and we’re in this tiny plane and the stakes are so high. That’s the challenge that I really live for,” Calis says about the preparation process.

The new season also introduces new characters including Lauren Lee Smith (Hell Motel) as Captain Riley, Shawn Ahmed (Coroner) as Flight Nurse Zay Patel, Leishe Meyboom (Locke & Key) as rookie Flight Nurse Piper Adler, Alexander Eling (The Way Home) as First Officer Wyatt Ellis, and Cecilia Lee (Star Trek: Starfleet Academy) as Pilot Maya Chang. As a new group of pilots and medics emerge, it shakes up the team’s dynamics and poses some challenges. Both Calis and Holmstrom are excited for viewers to get to know the fresh faces joining the crew.

“I’m really excited. I know we have such a special season and we have some new faces that come in and bring in some new energy. We all had so much fun filming this season. And I can’t wait to see what that looks like and how that translates on screen because it’s so important that an ensemble gets along. We truly all love each other so much that I cannot wait the audiences to [get to see that] this season,” Calis says.
