We were joined on the Popternative show by Jennifer Tilly and Josh Zuckerman to discuss Sason 3 of the supernatural drama and mystery series, School Spirits. The third season debuted on January 28 on Paramount+ with the first three episodes and picked up right where Season 2 ended: Maddie (Peyton List) finally back in her body, but now Simon (Kristian Ventura) found himself trapped in the underworld alongside Mr. Martin (Zuckerman) and Janet (Jess Gabor).
Also returning for Season 3 are Spencer MacPherson as Xavier, Kiara Pichardo as Nicole, Sarah Yarkin as Rhonda, Nick Pugliese as Charley, Rainbow Wedell as Claire, Ci Hang Ma as Quinn, Miles Elliot as Yuri, and Milo Manheim as Wally Clark. The new season introduces a few new faces including Tilly as Dr. Hunter-Price, the district superintendent of Split River High School, who doesn’t appear to have the best intentions when it comes to the school.
On what drew her toward the character, Tilly says, “They just sent me the first script and I loved the way she was written. I thought, ‘Wow, this is one bad bitch.’ And I liked the way that she comported herself. I thought there’s something slightly sinister about her. I just had a feeling. So, I put that layer in and then as I started getting the scripts, I was like, ‘This woman is not on a good path.’ I mean, she just gets more and more awful. She’s a terrible mother, as you’ve seen. You’ve seen [a bit of] that in episode one. She attracts quite a dark energy because she has a dark energy herself. So, it’s going it gets quite grotesque and awful for her.”
Zuckerman’s character, Mr. Martin, has been through lot in the last two seasons, and he notes that even the cast is surprised by the show’s storylines and twists—often needing to re-read the scripts and debrief afterwards: “I mean, script by script, we’re just as surprised as the audience is, you know, watching episode by episode. And we always need a follow-up. [We] need a like a Q&A after [we] read the episode and it’s just very exciting for us and feels earned. Nothing is gratuitous. It all feels like it’s fantastic and shocking, but it all feels emotionally honest and therefore that much more rewarding as a viewer and as a performer.”
