We caught up with actor Thomas Boyce III who can be seen in the highly anticipated coming-of-age sci-fi film, Crater, premiering today, May 12 on Disney+. Directed by Kyle Patrick Alvarez (Homecoming, 13 Reasons Why), Crater tells the story of Caleb Channing (Isaiah Russell-Bailey), who was raised on a lunar mining colony and is about to be permanently relocated to a faraway planet following the death of his father (Scott Mescudi, aka Kid Cudi). But before leaving, to fulfill his dad’s last wish, he and his three best friends, Dylan (Billy Barratt), Borney (Orson Hong), and Marcus (Thomas Boyce III), and a new arrival from Earth, Addison (Mckenna Grace), hijack a rover for one final adventure on a journey to explore a mysterious crater.
Check out our conversation with Thomas below.
How excited are you for Crater to be released on Disney+ for the world to see?
Thomas Boyce III (TB III): I’m so excited! It’s been a long time coming, and everyone involved put in so much hard work.
What were some learning experiences you gained as an actor working on this project?
TB III: Those cool space suits you see in movies like Interstellar, or 2001: A Space Odyssey, those are HEAVY! I was so excited whenever I had gotten fitted and tried on my suit for the first time, but never did I think it was going to be such a hassle moving around in those things. Beauty is Pain.

What was your audition process like?
TB III: The audition process was actually really relaxed. I actually initially sent in a self-tape for Caleb (played by Isaiah Russell-Bailey), but the team then asked me to audition for Marcus, and the rest is history.
Can you tell us about your character, Marcus, in Crater?
TB III: Marcus is the soul of the group. I’d best describe him as a character similar to Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy.

When people get to watch the film, what are you hoping they get out of it?
TB III: I hope our audience takes away the themes of the power of friendship and togetherness. Crater has those themes most prominently displayed throughout the film.
Would you like to work on other science fiction projects in the future?
TB III: Absolutely, I love Sci-Fi! I’d hop in front of the green screen anytime.
