We caught up with actor Spencer Lord who can currently be seen playing Aiden Walsh in The CW legal drama series, Family Law, which returned for season 3 on January 17th. It follows Abby (played by Jewel Staite) and her dysfunctional family as they help other dysfunctional families at her father’s law firm – all while navigating their own personal dramas.

Family Law also stars Victor Garber, Genelle Williams, Zach Smadu, Luke Camilleri, Eden Summer Gilmore, Bobbi Charlton, and Lauren Holly. Spencer can also be seen in CBC’s longest-running series Heartland, where he joined the cast for season 17. Spencer plays Nathan Pryce Jr., a mysterious character who returns to town and holds a special place in Amy’s (played by Amber Marshall) heart.

We asked Spencer about his acting journey, what we can expect from season 3 of Family Law, working on Heartland, and more.

Check out our conversation below.

When did you decide that storytelling and acting were what you wanted to do?

Spencer Lord (SL): In grade 12 I did the school musical. I loved it. The most fun I could imagine having. So naturally I took that newfound love of theatre, bundled it up, and stuffed it in a sack in my closet for six years while I worked my buns off to become an engineer. In the midst of forcing myself to get out of bed and go to work every morning for a year or so, I slowly realized that I wasn’t at all interested in doing something so effortful for my entire working life. Don’t get me wrong, I think engineering is incredibly interesting and important, just not for me. I wanted joy and fulfillment and purpose, and so I reached into the back of my closet, pulled out that love of theatre, and decided what the hell, let’s give it a shot. Pretty quickly I realized I made the right choice. I love what I do.

What can you tell us about season 3 of Family Law and your character?

SL: I’m horrible at answering this question without giving something away so I’ll leave it at this: there will be a little love, a little backyard barbecuing, and a little fire alarm fun.

What has been the best advice someone has ever given you about acting?

SL: I’ve gotten plenty of great advice through the years. I’ll share something that a friend and mentor, Brian Markinson, often shares with his students. It’s a poem by Rumi called The Guest House:

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

What was it like joining season 17 of Heartland?

SL: Like coming home to a warm cup of tea and a blanket after a walk in the rain. Seriously. The cast and crew of Heartland are such a beautiful family of people, and so welcoming, that it felt like home to me from the get go.

When did you start to realize how passionate the Heartland fanbase is?

SL: I got to take part in fan day last year and let me tell ya, these folks know how to FAN. There were people from so many places around the world that we could have held a UN summit, and they all got to participate as extras in the show. You could feel how excited they were to be a part of something they hold so dear. It was inspiring.

What is your favorite thing about being part of Family Law?

SL: The people, the people, the people. Family Law shares the quality with Heartland that everyone is there because they love their job, and the whole crew from top to bottom is so kind and welcoming. Also, shooting Vancouver for Vancouver is pretty fun. Running around the seawall or doing a scene amongst the laughing men statues has a certain sentimental value to it that I’m very fond of.
