We recently caught up with actor Nick Schultz about the film, What’s My Name Again?, which was released July 18, 2023 on VOD. Inspired by real events, the film is set in 1985 and is a raw and unfiltered look into an unconventional mother and son relationship and the impact of having three disengaged and often toxic fathers.

What’s My Name Again? recently premiered at the Independent Filmmakers Showcase Film Festival in Los Angeles at which it won Best Drama. It was filmed in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic in Los Angeles and San Diego, and features a cast of talented rising stars including Schultz, Ryan Winn, Allison Byrnes, Talia Mychael Blaney, Lucas Coleman, Theo Newton, and Daniel Abraham Stevens.

We asked Nick about being a storyteller, his character in What’s My Name Again?, and more. Check out our conversation below.

*This interview was conducted prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike.

When did you decide that you wanted to be a storyteller?

Nick Schultz (NS): I decided I wanted to be a storyteller when I was very young, maybe 7 or 8 years old. I remember the exact day my class saw a movie and I yelled out that I wanted to be an actor! The fire inside of me has only burned bigger ever since. The impact movies had on me growing up moved me in such a way that it became my mission to get to a position where I could participate in the magic of cinema and inspire people across the world.

What can you tell us about your character Griffin in What’s My Name Again?

NS: Griffin in WMNA is fun, goofy, a go with the flow type of guy. Although, underneath all the fun and smiles lives a deep void, questioning who he really is and confronting his sexuality. It may be impossible to watch this film and not want to give Griff a big hug. Playing Griff involved keeping my heart on my sleeve every take and it was an absolute honor to share his truth in this amazing story.

How would you describe the genre and style of this film?

NS: I would describe this film as a dramedy. This film has some very funny moments as well as a great story line and strong moments that pull at the heartstrings.

What’s the best advice someone has ever given you about storytelling and acting?

NS: That great storytelling and acting always comes from the heart, not the head. Take a risk and never be afraid to be unapologetically truthful.

When people get to watch What’s My Name Again?, what are you hoping they get out of it?

NS: I really hope they laugh, cry, and get shown that a lot of times all you need to do is lean into the people who love you most. Have the difficult conversations you need to. Say YOUR truth. Be there for your friends. I think after people watch this movie they will have that warm fuzzy feeling that at the end of the day everything will be okay.
