We caught up with Avianna Mynhier who can be seen playing Deputy Maxx Covington in the new procedural crime drama series, Blue Ridge, which premiered April 7th on Cowboy Way Channel. Based on the popular 2020 film, the six-episode series is set in the mountains of North Carolina and follows Sheriff Justin Wise who takes the law into his own hands. The cast also includes Johnathon Schaech, Sarah Lancaster, Graham Greene, and Taegen Burns.
Avianna is known for her role as Rachel Ward on AMC’s hit series The Walking Dead, and co-starred in Showtime’s The Affair and Nickelodeon’s hit comedy Henry Danger. We asked Avianna about Blue Ridge and what viewers can expect from her character, as well as her time on The Walking Dead, and more.

What can you tell us about Blue Ridge and your character?
Avianna Mynhier (Am): Blue Ridge is an action-crime drama set at the heart of the Blue Ridge mountains. It follows a sheriff, played by the incredible Johnathon Schaech, and his two deputies as they solve crime to protect the town. It’s a family friendly show that manages to mix a lot of heart and humor into a procedural. Every episode focuses on a new case, so there’ll be lots of new fun and mystery each week!
I play Deputy Maxx Covington. Maxx is so smart and brave. She’s the youngest member of their team, and also the only woman, so she’s really got to step up to the plate. She has a certain strength that I admire, but that’s mixed with this beautiful compassion and genuine desire to serve the community. I thank the writers for that, namely showrunner, writer and director, Gary Wheeler. He has a lot of strong women in his life that I believe he wrote into Maxx.
What were some learning experiences for you as an actor working on Blue Ridge?
AM: I learned how important it is to spend time with real deputies before filming. There were so many little mannerisms that I found spectacular when I really zoomed in and paid attention. I also learned how relaxed I can feel as an actor when the entire set really jives together. When everyone plays a part in upholding a certain standard of kindness and respect, everyone’s artistry can shine. It creates this safe, inclusive place where everyone is encouraged to rise to the moment.
What can you tell us about working on The Walking Dead?
AM: Working on The Walking Dead was a masterclass in television acting for me. When I booked the role of Rachel Ward, I walked onto a show that had been thriving for almost a decade at the time. It was a well oiled machine and everyone was like family to each other. It was really something to behold. I just acted like a sponge on that set and soaked it all up. Made some incredible friends too. I had, and still have, so much admiration for the actors on that show, folks like Danai Gurira, Lauren Ridloff, Norman Reedus – just absolute powerhouses.
What do you feel is the best part about being an actor?
AM: Oh, interesting! I think one of the best things about being an actor is the opportunity to really study the world around you. You get this chance to be radically present and tune in to the world and people around you. You get to discover truth and reflect it in your art. I also really appreciate how every project brings such newness. You’ll never not be challenged and forced to grow.
Outside of acting, what are some of your hobbies?
AM: Oh my goodness, I have too many hobbies ha! I love dancing, podcasting, apple picking, brain puzzles, writing, cycling, reading… The list is endless!
