We were joined on the Popternative show by Johnny Sequoyah (Dexter: New Blood) who stars as Lucy in Primate, the new horror film about a family’s adopted chimpanzee who gets bitten by a rabid animal and unexpectedly turns violent while on vacation in Hawaii.

Primate premiered in theaters on a January 9, making it one of the first horror films to hit theaters in 2026. Directed by Johannes Roberts (47 Meters DownThe Strangers: Prey at Night) who co-wrote the script with Ernest Riera (Nowhere47 Meters Down), it also stars Jessica Alexander (The Little Mermaid), Troy Kotsur (CODA), Victoria Wyant (My Fault: London), Gia Hunter (Sherlock & Daughter), Benjamin ChengCharlie Mann (The Watchers), Tienne Simon (All the Devils Are Here), and Miguel Torres Umba (Institute).

Sequoyah reflects on her time filming Primate, a film set in Hawaii but was actually shot in London, her collaboration with director and writer Roberts, highlighting his thoughtful approach and the creative freedom he gave the cast. She notes that the process has changed how she watches movies, giving her a deeper appreciation for storytelling and craft.
