There was certainly no shortage of movies in 2021. Although covid-19 delayed production, we were still given an abundance of films varying in genres. It was difficult to choose just 10, but we finally narrowed down our picks. Check out our 10 favorite movies of 2021 below!
CODA
CODA follows a hearing teenage girl named Ruby (played by Emilia Jones) who is a child of deaf adults (the acronym is CODA). Marlee Matlin and Troy Kotsur play her parents, and Daniel Durant as her brother who is also deaf. Ruby has a passion and talent for singing and wants to apply to a prestigious music school, but is torn between her family commitments and her own dreams. Everyone needs to see this movie. Check out our previous interview with Emilia Jones here.
Fear Street Trilogy
This technically should count as three movies, but we will let it slide as one. In July 2021, Netflix released their film trilogy based on R.L. Stine’s book series with the same name. Each film is connected to one another, with the second one specifically set at a sleepaway camp which made it the perfect summer slasher. The soundtrack also really elevates the films; we found ourselves listening to it all summer long. You can check out our interviews with many of the cast here!
Ghostbusters: Afterlife
The highly anticipated sequel to Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II finally came to theatres in November 2021 after covid-19 delayed its release. The initial trailer came nearly 2 years ago – but it was worth the wait. Ghostbusters: Afterlife was a fun experience filled with nostalgia, but even if one wasn’t familiar with the original films, they would still be able to enjoy and follow along. Be sure to check out our interview with Ernie Hudson here about the sequel and what it was like to reunite with the original cast.
Lamb
This is truly one of the most unique films we’ve seen. It follows a couple in Iceland who discover something shocking in their sheep barn. While it is technically a horror film, it doesn’t stick to the typical horror tropes we are accustomed to. Iceland officially submitted Lamb as their entry for Best International Feature Film at the 2022 Oscars.
Last Night in Soho
This is another film on our list with an incredible soundtrack. The psychological thriller follows aspiring fashion designer Eloise (Thomasin McKenzie) who is somehow able to enter the 1960s and comes across a singer named Sandy (Anya Taylor-Joy). Eloise soon realizes something dark happened with Sandy and tries to get to the bottom of it. The music, aesthetics, and acting really stand out in Last Night in Soho.
Luca
Luca is the perfect summer film that everyone can enjoy. Set in a seaside town on the Italian Riviera, Luca (voiced by Jacob Tremblay) is a sea monster (but a cute one!) who is curious about life outside of the water. When he exits the water, he magically turns into a human boy and explores the town with his new friend Alberto (voiced by Jack Dylan Grazer). It’s a sweet, emotional, funny and memorable experience.
Malignant
We don’t quite know how to describe this one – but if you’re a horror fan, you definitely need to check out Malignant. We recommend avoiding reading/watching reviews for it beforehand as it might spoil the major storyline.
Nobody
Nobody easily made our top 10 list. Emmy winner Bob Odenkirk leads this action packed movie as a bored suburban man who fails to defend himself and his family from robbers and it soon triggers him. As over-the-top as it may seem at times, Nobody delivers as a wild ride.
Spider-Man: No Way Home
No explanations, justifications, nor comments needed for this one.
Tick, Tick…Boom!
Even if musicals aren’t your thing, you will want to give Tick, Tick…Boom! a chance. It’s based on the autobiographical pop/rock musical by playwright Jonathan Larson, played by Andrew Garfield. The film is a beautiful tribute to theater and Larson. We’ve been listening to the soundtrack non-stop since watching this in November on Netflix. Be sure to check out our interview with the amazing Adam Pascal who has a cameo in Tick, Tick…Boom! here.
Those are our 10 favorite movies of 2021! We can’t wait to see what’s in store for 2022.
