Oscar Awards Recap
The biggest night in Hollywood has come and gone officially concluding award show season. The 96th Academy Awards, aka the Oscars, aired live on Sunday, March 10 on ABC with host Jimmy Kimmel. Kimmel opened the evening with a standard hosting monologue making jokes about the nominated films and addressing current events.
The Oscars also brought back a presenting format that was wildly popular and only done once in 2009. For the four acting categories (Actor in A Leading Role, Actor in A Supporting Role, Actress in A Leading Role, and Actress in A Supporting Role) five previous winners took the stage to announce the nominees. It was a night of firsts for many of the awarded winners. Most of the people who took home Oscars earned their first trophy, and for many it was also their first nomination like Cord Jefferson for American Fiction and Justine Trietfor Anatomy of a Fall.
Da’Vine Joy Randolph swept this award show season and took home every major award for her role in The Holdovers and the Oscars was no different. She delivered an emotional acceptance speech about remaining true to herself while navigating the industry.
As expected, Oppenheimer continued their winning streak taking home an Oscar for Best Picture and first time Oscar wins for Christopher Nolan, Cillian Murphy, and Robert Downey Jr. for Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actor respectively. Poor Things also scored big during the night with Emma Stone taking home her second Best Actress Oscar for her role in the film, although many expected Lily Gladstone to win for her captivating role in Killers of the Flower Moon following her SAG award win last month.
The biggest moment during the show was hands down Ryan Gosling’s performance of “I’m Just Ken.” He performed the hit song from the Barbie movie as part of other performances throughout the evening for nominated Original Song contenders. “I’m Just Ken” may have lost to Billie Eilish and Finneas’ “What Was I Made For?” from the same film, but Gosling’s Oscars performance will truly go down in the show’s history.
