Netflix today announced a new series Death by Lightning, a drama chronicling the rise of U.S. President James Garfield and his subsequent assassination by Charles Guiteau. Matthew Macfadyen (Succession, Deadpool 3, Stonehouse) will play Charles Guiteau and Michael Shannon (George & Tammy, Nocturnal Animals, Waco) will play James Garfield.
The series is from creator Mike Makowsky (Bad Education, Take Me) and Executive Producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss (Metal Lords, 3 Body Problem, Game of Thrones), under their deal with Netflix, and Matt Ross (Captain Fantastic, 28 Hotel Rooms) who will direct all episodes. Bernie Caulfield (3 Body Problem, Game of Thrones, Big Love) also serves as Executive Producer.
Based on the novel Destiny Of The Republic by Candice Millard, the logline reads: “Death by Lightning is a drama series that brings to life the epic and stranger-than-fiction true story of James Garfield, reluctant 20th president of the United States, and his greatest admirer Charles Guiteau — the man who would come to kill him.”
