Netflix today announced that Lynn Painte’s bestselling 2021 book, Better Than the Movies, wil be adapted into a feature film starring Beatrice Kitsos (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Child’s Play) and David Iacono (Fear Street: Prom Queen, The Summer I Turned Pretty).
Directed by co-writer Julia Hart (I’m Your Woman, Miss Stevens), the film “will be a love letter to romantic comedies. Liz’s obsession with the genre proves very helpful when she schemes with her annoying but cute next-door neighbor to get the attention of her untouchable crush. Better Than the Movies pays homage to all the romance tropes — fake relationship, enemies to lovers, boy next door — but turns them on their heads in this new take on what happily ever after looks like.”
Hart co-wrote the script with Jordan Horowitz (I’m Your Woman, La La Land) and Heather Flanders (The Mick, Mixed-ish).
Better Than the Movies is a #1 New York Times bestseller. It has spent 44 months on the New York Times monthly YA Paperback Best Sellers list and 20 weeks on the weekly YA Hardcover Best Sellers list.
