We were joined on the Popternative show by Lopez vs Lopez stars George Lopez (George Lopez show), Selenis Leyva (Orange Is the New Black) and Al Madrigal (Night School) to discuss the second season of the NBC comedy series, which premiered April 2nd. Season one premiered in November 2022 and also stars George’s daughter, Mayan Lopez. With a focus on family dysfunction, the second season highlights new life changes the Lopez family faces as George takes his first step in sobriety.
On returning for season 2, George says, “When you do the pilot [episode] you know everything’s on the pilot. [If] you don’t get that one right, you don’t get first seasons. I think we all have just melted together really quickly, the crew is from some of the best shows that have been on TV, and we’e already going, we just did show number 30 and we have all systems go.”
Al touches on his experience as a stand-up comic and how it plays a role in filming Lopez vs Lopez, “Multi-cams have always had great stand-up comics […] Stand-up comedy lends itself to multi-camera acting so that’s why you’ve seen the great comics get these shows and they do so well because we’re used to performing in front of live studio audience.”
When discussing her previous roles and what interests her in the characters she plays, Selenis says “I [always] want to bring that honesty of what it is to be a woman, what it is to be a Latina, what it is to be a mother, what it is to be a caregiver; [this] motivates me with characters that I pick or pick me. And [with Lopez vs Lopez], what I brought I think is the heart.”
