We were joined on the Popternative show by Alicia Witt who plays Ruth Harker in NEON’s Longlegs from writer and director Osgood Perkins. Witt stars in the new horror flick alongside Maika Monroe (It Follows, Watcher), Blair Underwood (American Crime Story, Quantico), and Nicolas Cage (Dream Scenario, Renfield).
Longlegs follows FBI agent Lee Harker (Monroe) in pursuit of a serial killer (Cage) who uncovers a series of occult clues that she must solve to end his terrifying killing spree.
On what made Alicia want to play Lee Harker’s mother, Ruth, she says, “It was the character more than anything. For me, when I read a script I look first and foremost to the character I’m considering and I’m drawn to complicated characters, I’m drawn to characters that on the surface I might read it and think, I have nothing in common with this character, but that’s my challenge and joy as an actor.”
Alicia also explains that she was able to relate to Ruth’s character, “When I read Ruth and all of the various versions of her, and all of what she said and did, it may sound odd, but I related so viscerally to Ruth, I felt like I understood why she did what she did.”
