Fans had to wait over two years between Invincible season 1 and season 2, causing a lot of them to go to the comics for their Mark Grayson fix. While Robert Kirkman’s writing has been pretty accurately adapted for the screen, there are some significant changes.
What are they and what could that mean for the rest of the season? Let’s discuss, but be warned, there will be spoilers ahead for both Invincible season 2 and the comic books.
Invincible Season 2 Catch-up
The major events of Invincible season 2 do a great job of bringing the comics to life. Where things are changed, they are often for the better. Not just to save time, but to take out the fluff, condensing the show in order to make it a more enjoyable experience overall.
In the comic books Debbie is not nearly as prominent as she is in the series. When Nolan leaves her, she is a wreck, turning to alcohol to solve her problems. We do see this in the series but she picks herself back up pretty quickly. In the comics she essentially binge drinks for many, many issues.
One of the biggest changes in the series that reflects this is the details surrounding Atlantean Queen Aquaria. Since Nolan has left Earth, Mark is ordered by Cecil to marry Queen Aquaria. However, when he arrives he is told that this custom has changed and he is now tasked with fighting a sea monster.
In the comic books this plot point goes on quite a bit longer and has a lot more detail. While Mark is told he must kill a sea monster, he is also told he must wed the queen. On top of that, he is to consummate the marriage in front of everyone. This is very awkward for Mark because he does not want to lose his virginity to a fish. Lucky for him he discovers that the queen’s advisor is in love with her, and the two device a plan to get them together instead.
In the series we see Nolan’s love for Thraxa, however in the comic books he conquers the planet and plans to use it as a peace offering with the Viltrumites. Because of these changes, Nolan becomes a lot more likable, however this will potentially alter the rest of his arc in the show, at least a little bit.
Perhaps the most interesting change is the identity of the mole who is feeding information to the Viltrumites. Allen is nearly killed after he begins his search with the final stinger of the first half of the season hinting that Thaedus is indeed that mole when he turns off Allen’s life support. In the comic books things go a bit differently, and the mole reveal is all but underwhelming as it is a very minor character.
Where Does Invincible Season 2 Go From Here?
With the premiere of Invincible season 2 part 2 fast approaching, it is time to speculate where things might go from here. Considering the vast difference in Thaedus being pinned as the mole, and how important he is later on in the comic books, we can all but assume this was a distraction.
Surely, he cannot be the mole. But who will be? Perhaps this minor character will have their moment to shine or perhaps the role of the mole will be pinned on someone else. We do not want to get into spoilers, but the comic books are there should you choose to discover for yourself.
Mark will likely get home from Thraxa somehow, but he will certainly have a lot of relationships to mend. While we are not sure exactly how long in Earth time he has been away, Amber is likely to not be thrilled about it. The same goes for Cecil, who he practically begged to be able to get back in the field.
As for the Guardians of the Globe, if the comic books are any indication, fans are in for a wild and emotional ride.
