During this year’s Disney+ Day, the new ten-part Disney+ Original docu-series Growing Up premiered on September 8th. Created by Brie Larson and Culture House, the hybrid docu-series explores the challenges, triumphs, and complexities of adolescence through ten compelling coming of age stories. The series uses narrative, experimental, and documentary filmmaking to follow one casted individual, ages 18-22, as they tell their stories.

Each 30-minute episode features one young person, or “hero,” and their experiences growing up as they find themselves on their path to self-discovery and acceptance. The episodes are anchored by deeply personal interviews that allows our heroes to walk us through their childhood and teenage years. Alongside these interviews, creative cinematic reenactments help bring their major inflection points to life.

We were joined on the Popternative show by showrunner/executive producer/director Nicole Galovski, directors Kishori Rajan, Smriti Mundhra, Ashley Eakin, Elegance Bratton, Ekwa Msangi and Rudy Valdez, and heroes Gavin Arneson, Amiri Nash and Vanessa Aryee.
