
Netflix‘s latest film is the family adventure flick Chupa which dropped on April 7. Directed by Jonás Cuarón, it follows 13-year-old Alex who travels to Mexico to meet his extended family for the first time who discovers a chupacabra (a mythical creature said to exist in parts of Latin America) living under his grandfather’s shed. Upon this discovery, Alex and his family try their best to protect the creature who they name ‘Chupa’ from a scientist trying to capture him. The film stars Demián Bichir, Evan Whitten, Christian Slater, Ashley Ciarra, Nickolas Verdugo, Adriana Paz, Gerardo Taracena, and Julio Cesar Cedillo.

We were joined on the Popternative show by Christian Slater, Demián Bichir, Evan Whitten, and director Jonás Cuarón to discuss filming Chupa and what gravitated each of them towards this project. One of the main themes of the film is culture which Christian, Demián, and Evan all felt were important takeaways of the story.

From a directing perspective, Jonás goes into detail about filming the scenes with Chupa and Evan before CGI went into effect, and how he wanted to make a movie that his kids could watch and enjoy.
