We were joined on the Popternative show by Will Angus (Almost Friday TV, Prom Dates), Jack Martin (Pizza Movie, La Brea), and Nicholas Duvernay (Reminders of Him, The White Lotus) who star in Mindy Kaling’s new workplace comedy series, Not Suitable for Work. The series debuted with the first three episodes on June 3 and centres on five career-driven twenty-somethings navigating ambition and, everyday life in New York’s upscale Murray Hill.

The series also stars Ella Hunt (Saturday Night, Dickinson), Avantika (Pretty Lethal, Mean Girls), and Jay Ellis (Running Point, Insecure) with recurring guest stars Victor Garber (Family Law, Alias), Greg Germann (Grey’s Anatomy, Ally McBeal), Judy Gold (Better Things, Search Party), Ego Nwodim (Hoppers, Saturday Night Live), Harry Richardson (The Gilded Age, Poldark), and Constance Wu (Crazy Rich Asians, Fresh Off the Boat).

Angus, Martin, and Duvernay play roommates Davis, Josh, and Kel, each navigating their respective professional careers and love lives. When reflecting on what drew them to their respective roles, Angus describes Davis as a flawed but hardworking finance professional, while Duvernay says he connects with Kel who serves as the helps keep the friend group in tact. Martin shares his interest in playing Josh, a character shaped by satire of the wealthy elite and nepotism.

The three also share their excitment around their characters and admiration for Kaling’s creative vision. “Her entire body of work – I I love everything she’s done. So it was pretty easy to look at [my] character and talk to her about it. I love characters that are, like, kind of like losers in a way. I don’t think Davis is fully a loser, but he’s such a tryhard and he’s so flawed,” Angus says.

“There’s so many parallels with Kel [in] just the way he handles situations, especially with this friend group. He’s kind of in the middle of these two guys. Yet, Kel is somewhere in the middle kind of holding the glue together between the guys, at least in the in the roommate dynamic,” Duvernay adds.

“I love rich people satire. I think it’s so funny. Especially [with the] children of rich people like Josh. It’s about power at the end of the day and and I I just think it always ends up really funny. Some of my favorite stuff [are] Succession, White Lotus, The Menu, Triangle of Sadness. There’s so many great different pieces of art about it. I think it’s great and it’s beautifully written. Mindy’s a genius,” says Martin.
