We were joined on the Popternative show by Sasha Calle (The Flash) who plays Sandra in the new romantic drama, On Swift Horses which premiered in theaters on April 25. Sasha stars alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones (Normal People), Jacob Elordi (Saltburn), Will Poulter (Warfare), and Diego Calva (Babylon).
Directed by Daniel Minahan (Fellow Travelers) and written by Bryce Kass (Lizzie), the film follows Muriel (Edgar-Jones) and her husband Lee (Poulter) in the 1950s as they begin a bright new life in California when he returns from the Korean War. But their newfound stability is upended by the arrival of Lee’s charismatic brother, Julius (Elordi), a wayward gambler with a secret past.
A dangerous love triangle quickly form, and when Julius takes off in search of the young card cheat (Calva) he’s fallen for, Muriel’s longing for something more propels her into a secret life of her own, gambling on racehorses and exploring a love she never dreamed possible.
Sandra lives openly as a lesbian and is Muriel’s neighbor. Muriel quickly becomes attracted to Sandra and the two grow closer as she begins to explore her own identity.
On Sandra’s character, Sasha says, “I think [Sandra] knows exactly who she is, and that’s why I admire her. That’s why she sets a boundary and she says, ‘I’m a person, my feelings, my womanhood, my love and my intimacy all matter and they matter as much a everyone else’s.’ And that was really beautiful from her. I think she opens herself up to someone who is lost and doesn’t judger her for it, bit she knows who she is.”
