There are some things that people often regret, but things frequently go unsaid, maybe for better or for worse. However, for Paramount Pictures’ latest undertaking in Regretting You, that path is laid out with heartfelt emotions and family ties that make and break. The second Colleen Hoover book-to-film adaptation follows Clara (Mckenna Grace) as she goes through huge ups and downs, trying to live a free life with Miller (Mason Thames) while discovering some harsh truths.

Though the story of Regretting You is an emotionally messy one, this adaptation balances itself out with a touch of comedy. This is done through its multiple side characters, but one of them sticks out: Clara’s best friend, Lexie, played by Sam Morelos.

We caught up with Sam Morelos to talk about Lexie’s role and balancing the film’s rom-com tones through their character (and some special guest appearances!).

Morelos recalled the one line or bit from Regretting You that she shared with Thames and Grace that was the funniest moment they had filming: “There’s one: it was a dinner scene, or a lunch scene. It was one of the first scenes in the movie and this was an improv line. I was just trying to find a button. I was like, ‘I want to talk. Let me talk!’ So then I went, ‘Hey, just because there’s a goalie doesn’t mean you can’t score.’ That’s what my mom always says and I thought that was so funny.”

Morelos added, “I don’t remember where I heard that or if I ever heard that! I made myself laugh with it and I was like, ‘I’m just gonna slap this. Hopefully it works.’ And then Josh [Boone] was like, do it again. Do it every take!’”

Morelos also talked about the inspiration that she infused into Lexie’s character to make her hilarious. “This was like my second movie ever and I never saw myself as a comedic actor. Then, I worked with the amazing Chloe Fineman and Jillian Bell for Summer of ‘69 and their SNL alums, like their job is to be funny.”

“What I took from that set was Chloe would come in with a note cap full of all the lines that she was dreaming up and thinking about the night before, because you know what scene you’re doing,” Morelos added.

“There’s so much invisible work that happens before they get to set and I was just deeply inspired by my colleagues and watching things like literal SNL legends preparing like that, because funny doesn’t come easy,” Morelos noted. “I think it’s a common misconception, it doesn’t just appear out of thin air.”

One of the scenes in Regretting You that highlights this comedic spotlight involves Clara and Lexie leaving a messy dinner celebration to reflect on their lives, which Morelos also recalled.

“I think that, especially in the scene before that crazy dinner scene and  all of that, it was just like bringing that energy of, ‘Well, man, I can’t get any worse than this,’” Morelos explained. “It’s such a friend-thing to do, like, ‘Hey, you want to get turnt instead? Face your problems?’ and the answer will be yes.”

“It’s so fun to pretend to be drunk because obviously, we’re kids, so we don’t, but like to pretend like we’re, ‘Oh my god, yeah, pour one out for a real one.’ It was just very young, friendly, and like, I loved it!”

As a surprise during the interview, I was also present on-site for New York Comic Con 2025. Given all the excitement from this year’s NYCC, I asked Morelos which comic character best represents Lexie.

“I was a DC and Marvel kid growing up,” Morelos said. “I went to a lot of Comic-Cons with my dad and I think that maybe like, Ms. Marvel would probably be, personality-wise, very close to Lexie! I think about the youth and her general, fun, coolness, yeah!”
