We were joined on the Popternative show by Richa Moorjani and Poorna Jagannathan to discuss the final season of Netflix’s coming-of-age comedy series Never Have I Ever which premiered on June 8. Season one premiered in April 2020 and follows the complicated life of a modern-day first-generation Indian American teenage girl played by Maitreyi Ramakrishnan. Returning series regulars for season four include Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as Devi Vishwakumar, Poorna Jagannathan as Nalini Vishwakumar, Richa Moorjani as Kamala, Jaren Lewison as Ben Gross, Darren Barnet as Paxton Hall-Yoshida, Lee Rodriguez as Fabiola Torres, and Ramona Young as Eleanor Wong.

In our interview, Poorna reflects on the growth of Nalini throughout the seasons: “It feels so natural and yet it feels so extraordinary at the same time. These characters are taking these massive emotional leaps and are growing so much in front of our eyes. When you track Nalini, when you first meet her, she’s just subsumed by grief and unable to fill the hole left by her husband.”

Richa talks about the final dance number in episode 10 and how she and Maitreyi had wanted to perform an Indian dance for a while, “we were planting seeds because we really wanted to manifest Kamala and Devi dancing in the show.”

Season 4 of Never Have I Ever is streaming on Netflix.
