The new coming-of-age romance series, Heartstopper, premiered April 22, 2022 on Netflix and is a massive hit globally. The 8-episode series currently has a Tomatometer rating of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is not an easy score to achieve. We were joined on the Popternative show by Rhea Norwood who makes her on-screen debut in Heartstopper as Imogen.

Heartstopper is an adaption of the bestselling LGBTQ+ graphic novel by Alice Oseman and follows Charlie (Joe Locke) and Nick (Kit Connor) who meet at secondary school and quickly discover that their unlikely friendship is blossoming into an unexpected romance. Charlie, Nick and their circle of friends must navigate the ever-relatable journey of self discovery and acceptance, supporting each other as they learn to find their most authentic selves.

Rhea’s character, Imogen, however is not in the graphic novels, but she tells us that she didn’t think too much of it when preparing for her role. We also discuss the global reception of the series and what makes it so relatable, “LGBTQ+ stories can be positive and beautiful, and doesn’t have to solely focus on negative histories, secondly, I think every individual can take away that there is a place to be yourself regardless of anything in the world, and you will find your people,” Rhea tells us.
