Nashville-based rock/alternative four-piece Lost Hearts released their debut single, “Hate Yourself,” out today and is produced by Johnny K (3 Doors Down, Plain What T’s, Disturbed). The group consists of vocalist Max Frye, JT Shea and Victor Adriel on guitar and bass, and Mitch Arnholt on drums. The single also has an accompanying music video which launched last week in anticipation of the debut.

We spoke with Lost Hearts’ vocalist Max Frye about how the band formed, their sound, and more. Check out our conversation below.

Can you tell us how your group formed?

Max Frye (MF): I met Victor and JT through playing in various bands, we were all lead guitarists. We all started to hang out and often said we would love to start a band, but again, we were all lead guitarists. Who would play bass? Who would sing? We started to write songs together with no real intentions behind it, but when we came out of writing sessions with some songs we really liked, we decided we needed to figure it out! We decided I would sing and JT and Victor would switch off playing bass and guitar. We started to look for a drummer and we found Mitch who was also a guitarist, so many of our sessions together are all of us playing guitar. It’s an interesting dynamic for sure!

How would you describe the sound of your debut single, “Hate Yourself”?

MF: “Hate Yourself” has been described as Punk Rock attitude with a Pop Rock chorus. It was written very naturally on an acoustic guitar, we wrote the main part in 5 minutes. The song is written about a toxic relationship that you can’t seem to get away from, most people have been in a relationship like that and we hope people can relate to it!

Who would you say are some of your musical influences as a band?

MF: One thing all four of us have in common is that we are all really huge KISS fans! Other than that, our influences vary vastly, and we think that adds to our songwriting and sound. I love everything from 60s psychedelic, classic hard rock, 80s synthwave, and of course modern rock!

What is the creative process when putting together new music?

MF: Usually, we come up with a basic idea for a song, and JT and I will produce a demo version that brings it close to what we’re hearing in our heads. The demo process is where the song really takes on a life of its own and we make a lot of creative decisions. After we have 5-10 of those demos complete, we bring them to our producer, Johnny K and we see which one stands out as the next single.

What was the experience like filming the music video for “Hate Yourself”?

MF: We had such a great time filming “Hate Yourself”. It was all shot in one day at two locations, one dark room and one completely white room in our hometown of Nashville. We liked the contrast between the dark and light rooms. It was our first video together and we had a few friends with us helping. It was a lot of fun and a day we will likely never forget!
