Netflix is introducing a new generation to one of America’s most cherished literary classics with its new adaptation of Little House on the Prairie. Based on Laura Ingalls Wilder’s beloved book series, the family drama has secured a Season 2 renewal ahead of its July 9 premiere. The series stars Alice Halsey (Lessons in Chemistry) as Laura Ingalls, alongside Skywalker Hughes (Joe Pickett) as her older sister Mary, Luke Bracey (The Artful Dodger) as their father Charles “Pa” Ingalls, and Crosby Fitzgerald (The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox) as their mother Caroline “Ma” Ingalls.
We caught up with stars Luke Bracey and Crosby Fitzgerald to discuss bringing the beloved Ingalls family back to life again for TV. During our conversation, they open up about stepping onto the show’s immersive sets, the thoughtful approach to portraying Charles and Caroline Ingalls, filming Season 2 in Winnipeg while Season 1 prepares to debut, and why the series is truly a collaborative effort behind the scenes.
“One thing that I was always trying to be with Charles is to be a human being at the end of the day. And that balance of knowing where to put the weight in the scenes and what scenes to just live. It’s like, where do you let it flow and let it be human, and where do you really lean on things?” The end product is the shooting script which is a real testament to Rebecca Sonnenshine, our showrunner, and all the writers and the way they crafted this,” Bracey says.
For Fitzgerald, stepping into the world of Little House on the Prairie was unlike anything she had experienced before: “This is what the by far the biggest thing I’ve ever been a part of, the biggest role I’ve ever gotten. I could have never anticipated what day one [on set] would have been like. We drove pretty far out to location, we were staying in little cabins, in our own little houses, looking out on this beautiful Canadian lake and it was really a pinch me moment.”
Fitzgerald also reflects on the unique experience of filming the second season while the first is was just released: “We fly back to Winnipeg tomorrow pretty much to keep shooting season two. And it’s exciting because I think we started shooting season one before we even knew the kind of gravity of what this all meant to the world a little bit. And we’re safe in our kind of shooting bubble of doing season two as a little family again. And that I feel safe in that way.”
