We caught up with Kelli Ogmundson who stars opposite Joel McHale in FOX’s new workplace comedy series Animal Control which premiered on February 16th and became the network’s most-streamed scripted debut.

The series follows a group of Animal Control workers whose lives are complicated by the fact that animals are simple, but humans are not. Along with the lead cast of Joel McHale, Michael Rowland, Vella Lovell, Ravi Patel, Grace Palmer, Gerry Dee, Kelli Ogmundson and Alvina August, animals are the co-stars. Kelli plays Dolores, the receptionist at the Animal Control precinct. We asked Kelli about working on set with animals, learning experiences, and much more.

Check out our conversation below.

What’s it like working with so many (adorable!) animals on set of Animal Control?

Kelli Ogmundson (KO): As a big ol’ animal lover, it’s kind of a dream come true! They say don’t work with animals or children but honestly, getting to film a “kitten bath” scene, I’d like an addendum to that rule.

Any fun moments from set you can share?

KO: Well, speaking of the kitten bath, that was maybe the best day of my life. Probably Vella’s too. But I got a message the day before saying we needed to not pet any adult cats 24 hours before our scene. I have a wonderful little stinker at home who after 3pm the day before, I couldn’t pet! I had to pet him with a wooden spoon! Sorry Bruce!

How would you describe your character, Dolores?

KO: According to me, Dolores is hot, cool, and young. According to the writers, she is a bit of a wet blanket, constantly having to deal with her coworkers’ foolishness. She loves a good rule and can’t stand how often she is overlooked in her position. So I think she’s a balance between all of that.

As an actor, what are some learning experiences you’ve gained from Animal Control in particular?

KO: I’m a shyer person, so I learned a lot from just observing, but overall I think the most important thing I learned was having confidence in myself, whether it’s adding ideas, or bringing something unique to myself to the table.

The series has become FOX’s most-streamed scripted debut. What do you think makes the series appealing to many?

KO: I think there is a lot to love about our series. Everyone loves a good office comedy, which we are plus the bonus of adorable animals as co-stars? What’s not to love! Also I’m sure Joel McHale brings a crowd every time.

When people tune in, what do you hope they get out of it?

KO: I really hope they get the chance to sit back, relax, and just laugh. It is a silly and fun show, and there are some really excellent performers showcasing themselves so wonderfully. It’s Michael Rowland’s first job, so you get to see that little rising star before the fame sets in.
