We were joined on the Popternative show by Katie Cassidy (Arrow, A Nightmare on Elm Street) who stars in the new new horror film, Speed Demon, which she both stars in and produces. Also starring William H. Macy (Train Dreams, Shameless), the film follows a nun (Cassidy) and a priest (Macy) as they battle a powerful demon aboard a runaway train. Speed Demon released in theaters, On Demand, and On Digital on May 31.
When Father Novak and Sister Lu board a train from Montreal to New York City, they are unprepared for the danger and evil that awaits them. After the train is overtaken by the demon Asmodeus, the pair must fight possessed passengers while racing toward disaster, with Sister Lu forced to confront her wavering faith and perform the first exorcism ever carried out by a nun.
On taking on dual roles for this project, Cassidy says, “It was certainly a journey. It was Incredible to read [the script]. I read it to star in and produce and then to bring it to life, it [was] a journey, but such a fulfilling one and such a cool experience and a collaboration of like-minded people. And it’s really special, and I’m honored to be able to do that.”
When discussing her past roles, especially in the horror genre, including A Nightmare on Elm Street, Black Christmas, and When a Stranger Calls, Cassidy says she doesn’t carry over past experiences or mindsets from previous roles.
“The way I work is I do script analysis and I build backstory based off that script analysis and make it as full and detailed as possible. And then, after I play a role, it’s almost like you have to mourn that character and let that character go so that it doesn’t mix or blend within your personal life. Not to [be] so morbid, but it’s sort of just [to] you put it to bed for the time until you have to do interviews or if there’s a sequel.”
