Kathryn Newton has become a familiar face in genre films with standout performances in Paranormal Activity 4, Freaky, Ant-Man 3, Lisa Frankenstein, Abigail, and most recently, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come. Next, she’ll dive into shark-infested waters in the survival thriller The Devil’s Mouth, premiering July 29 on Prime Video. Ahead of the debut, we were joined on the Popternative show by Kathryn Newton to discuss the upcoming film which she describes as much more than a typical creature feature.
Newton stars alongside Lana Condor (Pretty Lethal, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before), Nico Hiraga (Sweethearts, Love in Taipei), Gavin Casalegno (The Summer I Turned Pretty, Queen of the Ring), Tommi Rose (Sweet Magnolias, A Savannah Haunting), and Tayme Thapthimthong (Alien: Earth, The White Lotus).
Directed by Jeff Wadlow (Truth or Dare, Kick-Ass 2) and set against Thailand’s coastal caves, The Devil’s Mouth follows five friends who embark on an adventure along Thailand’s coast before adulthood pulls them in different directions. But when a guided swim through a remote cave system turns deadly, they find themselves trapped with a relentless predator lurking beneath the water, forcing them into a desperate fight for survival.
Despite her growing list of credits, Newton says she approaches every project with the same level of curiosity and openness. “It doesn’t matter how many movies you’ve done. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never made a movie and I’ve made a hundred. When you and I work together, we’ve never had an experience like this before. So, I had no expectations. I approach every movie like I’ve never done one before.”
With only a short window between projects, Newton had to quickly prepare for the demanding water scenes. “We had like a week of rehearsal. I had just finished Ready or Not [2]. I had two days off and then I went straight into this movie and got my diver certificate. We did rehearsal and it was all about those [water] scenes [and] really making sure they felt phenomenal.”
