We were joined on the Popternative show by Justin Johnson Cortez who plays Calian in the new CW series Walker: Independence which premiered on October 6th and is a prequel to The CW’s Walker set in the 1800s. The official synopsis is: “This origin story follows Abby Walker, an affluent Bostonian whose husband is murdered before her eyes while on their journey out West, as she crosses paths with Hoyt Rawlins, a lovable rogue in search of purpose. Abby and Hoyt’s journey takes them to Independence, Texas, a small town with a big future.”
A member of an Apache tribe living outside of Independence, Calian works as a scout for the town while holding mixed feelings about the influx of the white settlers out West. Calian is curious about their innovations, music and culture, but he remains wary about losing his tribal lands. After spotting Abby (Katherine McNamara) half-dead in the brush, Calian saves her and takes her to Independence, vowing to help her find justice for her husband’s murder.
Justin is an Indigenous American actor of Yaqui Tribe descent and learned to speak Apache through an Apache translator on set and did most of his own stunts. In our interview, Justin talks about his characters’ arc throughout the season, working in the Western genre, and what to expect from the recent mid-season finale which aired on November 17th (spoiler free!).
