Seth MacFarlane’s space adventure series The Orville returned exclusively as a Hulu original series on June 2. The Orville: New Horizons is set 400 years in the future and finds the crew of the U.S.S. Orville continuing their mission of exploration as they navigate both the mysteries of the universe and the complexities of their own interpersonal relationships. In episode 305 (which premiered on June 30), we are introduced to Topa, played by Imani Pullum.

Topa is part of the Moclan alien race where it’s rare for a child to be born female. When this happens within the all male society, it is Moclan law that the child must undergo a surgical procedure to “correct” this issue and make them male. When Imani debuted as Topa, her character had been born female but given gender reassignment and raised as a male. However, as an adolescent, Topa realizes that something does not feel right. Topa searches for answers and uncovers the truth, ultimately leading Topa to have the gender reassignment reversed to live as her true self, as she was born.

We were joined on the Popternative show by Imani Pullum to discuss the new season and playing Topa which is filled with emotions. “She is a teenage girl, she’s got a lot going on, and she’s just learning a lot about herself […] it was fun going through that journey with her,” she tells us. We also discuss the many different genres in The Orville: New Horizons, and how she prepared for her role and the various aspects of the series.

Watch the full interview with Imani Pullum below.

Imani will appear throughout the remainder of the current season of The Orville: New Horizons which will conclude on August 4th.
