We were joined on the Popternative show by Gilles Geary who stars in the action sci-fi adventure Storm Rider: Legend of Hammerhead, which released in theaters on March 13. Written and directed by Domagoj Mazuran and Zoran Lisinac, the film takes place 300 years after a catasrophic flood where the legend of an outlawed Storm Rider inspires two rebellious islanders to find out the truth about the origin of their world.
Storm Rider: Legend of Hammerhead also stars Marco Ilsø (Vikings), Billy Barratt (Bring Her Back), James Cosmo (Braceheart), Sarah-Sofie Boussnina (Dune: Prophecy), Goran Bogdan (Mocvara), and Caroline Goodall (Nautilus). Geary plays a villain, Tarus, a central figure among the Founders, working to maintain order in a post-apocalyptic world.
Geary details the physical transformation that went into his character, “Storm Rider was very challenging in terms of the whole makeup and outfit type of situation because it was nothing like I’ve ever done before. So, sitting in a makeup chair [for] three hours before set every day, that gives you something you haven’t experienced before.”
He also notes the different approaches in theater versus film, having portayed portrayed Ted Wheeler in the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which debuted in London’s West End at the Phoenix Theatre in December 2023. He notes that while theater requires continuous performance, film allows for retakes while also requiring actors to treat the camera as the audience.
