We were joined on the Popternative show by Dylan Arnold who can be seen playing Dennis in the Lionsgate action crime thriller, 1992. Directed by Ariel Vromen (The Iceman) with a screenplay by Sascha Penn (Power Book III: Raising Kanan) and Vromen, the film had its wide theatrical release on August 30.
The ensemble cast also includes Tyrese Gibson (Furious 7), Clé Bennett (The Man in the High Castle), Christopher A’mmanuel (Black Lightning), Michael Beasley (Bloodline), Ori Pfeffer (Hacksaw Ridge), Tosin Morohunfola (Lawmen: Bass Reeves), Oleg Taktarov (The Machine), Scott Eastwood (Fast X), and the late Ray Liotta.
1992 follows Mercer (Tyrese Gibson) who is desperately trying to rebuild his life and his relationship with his son (Christopher A’mmanuel) amidst the turbulent 1992 LA uprising following the Rodney King verdict. Across town, another father and son (Ray Liotta and Scott Eastwood) put their own strained relationship to the test as they plot a dangerous heist to steal catalytic converters, which contain valuable platinum, from the factory where Mercer works.
Dylan tells us about some of the on set collaboration that went into the film: “In this case, there was a lot in the script, a lot of action and adrenaline, but in terms of my character specifically, there was a lot we discovered on set. There was one scene between [Christopher A’mmanuel] and I [where] we wrote on the day, we were figuring out momentum to bring to the characters. It was a wonderful balance of a strong starting point and then something to make our own.”
“Dennis, the character I play, there’s a lot of moments where he’s not talking, there’s a lot of moments where he’s silent, so Ariel [Vromen] and I were discovering things that were going on in his head, and ways we could make a dynamic so it didn’t feel like it was dead air,” he adds.
Dylan also discusses some of his past work including his role as Theo in the third season of Netflix’s hit psychological drama, You, and how those experiences play into other roles.
