We were joined on the Popternative show by director Brad Peyton (San Andreas, Rampage) to discuss his new sci-fi action thriller, Atlas, now streaming on Netflix.

Written by Leo Sardarian (StartUp) and Aron Eli Coleite (The Spiderwick Chronicles, Locke & Key), the film stars Jennifer Lopez, (The Mother, Hustlers), Simu Liu (Barbie, ShangChi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Sterling K. Brown (American Fiction, This Is Us), Gregory James Cohan (The VelociPastor), Abraham Popoola (Extraordinary, The Curse), Lana Parrilla (The Lincoln Lawyer, Once Upon a Time), and Mark Strong (1917, Kingsman: The Secret Service).

Atlas follows data analyst Atlas Shepherd (Lopez) with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence and joins a mission to capture a renegade robot with whom she shares a mysterious past. But when plans go awry, her only hope of saving the future of humanity from AI is to trust it.

“It’s fun; there is a conversation about AI and it’s a movie about trust, but it’s a big event-driven spectacle, adventure film. I am throwing a lot at the audience,” Peyton says of what viewers can expect when they watch.

On bringing big action to the screen, Peyton touches on his style of filmmaking, “I sank San Francisco and destroyed half of California [referring to San Andreas]. For some reason I end up destroying a lot of things when I make a movie.” Watch the full conversation below.

Atlas is streaming on Netflix.
