We recently chatted with actor Christine Nguyen about her journey in acting and working on the series The Bold Type. Christine is a Vietnamese/Chinese actor born and raised in Toronto, Canada who has also had roles in Nurses and In Production.

Check out what she had to say.

When did you decide that storytelling and acting was something you wanted to do?

CN: Acting gives me perspective and helps me connect with others. I remember being in high school drama class and really appreciating the amount of work and research one had to go through in order to create something specific, clear and impacting. Knowing this, my interest actually started within my own history. Being able to understand my parents, where they came from and where they are now has helped me appreciate the opportunity and privilege that I have to pursue this career.

What advice would you give to people pursuing acting?

CN: Don’t forget to be a person first. Be kind to yourself. Invest in who you are outside of your art and you’ll see just how enriched your craft will become.

What was your first acting role?

CN: I was a Munchkin in my grade 5 Elementary School’s production of Wizard of Oz. I remember being so nervous because I was hand picked to be one of the Munchkins that was supposed to highlight the yellow brick road. I was so engrossed and present in the moment that I completely forgot to march back as the curtain was closing.

What do you enjoy the most about acting?

CN: I appreciate the potential it has to change the world. Perspective is everything and being able to be of service and showcase humanity in the work is an absolute responsibility. It’s a craft that constantly pushes you to challenge who you are.

What was it like working on The Bold Type?

CN: It was my first big break and it didn’t come without its challenges! It was messy and mistakes were made but that’s what is beautiful about this work. The Bold Type was a place for me to explore my artistry at a heightened level and I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to find things that worked and things that didn’t. I’ve learned so much from the cast and crew and I’m absolutely honoured to have closed out this series with them.

What is the best thing about being a storyteller in your opinion?

CN: Freeing my inner child through play and without judgement. It’s a tough place to get to but when I get there, it feels like magic.
