We chatted with Autumn Best who stars in her first TV role in the CW sci-fi mystery series, 4400, which premiered on October 25, 2021. The second part of the season started on January 17, 2022 and Autumn portays Mildred Bell.
About 4400
In an instant, at least 4,400 overlooked, undervalued, or otherwise marginalized people who had vanished without a trace over the past century are returned to Detroit, having not aged a day and with no memory of what happened to them.
We asked Autumn about her acting experiences and working on 4400. Check out our conversation below.
When did you decide that storytelling and acting was something you wanted to do?
Autumn Best (AB): I’ve always loved performing, ever since I was a little kid, but growing up I was never quite sure if I would want to pursue acting as a career. It really wasn’t until I went to high school and started taking steps towards adult life (college, job hunting, etc.) that I realized; I literally cannot see myself doing anything else.
What was it like working on the series 4400?
AB: I learned so much about the industry just by observing makeup artists, writers, directors, you name it, that now I feel empowered to push myself creatively in ways I never even thought about before.
What can you tell us about your character in 4400?
AB: Mildred carries a lot of darkness: guilt, sadness, abandonment. I believe this is why she’s also such a loyal friend and leader. She wants to make the people she loves proud and at the end of the day, she just wants a family. People often toughen up and play the hero when they feel lost, Mildred is one of those.
Outside of acting, do you have any other interests or passions?
AB: I love writing! I hope to publish my poetry someday and write for a show or movie. I also have a passion for recycled fashion.

What has been the best advice someone has given you about acting?
AB: The advice that comes to mind right now is a quote from a video I watched for an acting class. Casting director David Rubin said to PBS NewsHour, “The most important thing for an actor to bring to the table is themselves, their own idiosyncrasies.” I think about this video often when preparing for an audition or showing up on set. I cannot be replicated, and that’s my real-life superpower.
What do you enjoy the most about acting?
AB: I love how incredibly challenging and complex it is. From auditions, rejections, ego, and fatigue to emotional vulnerability, it is such a demanding art form. I love the grittiness of it; I think it has the ability to refine your spirit.
