We were joined on the Popternative show by Academy Award winning actress Ariana DeBose (Wish, West Side Story) to discuss her new sci-fi thriller, I.S.S., premiering in theaters January 19th. Directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite (Our Friend, Blackfish), the film also stars John Gallagher Jr. (Hush, The Newsroom), Masha Mashkova (Fall All Mankind, McMafia), Pilou Asbæk (Ghost in the Shell, Game of Thrones), Costa Ronin (The Americans, Homeland), and Chris Messina (The Boogeyman, Based on a True Story).

The film is set entirely in the confines of the space station as astronauts are called to duty in fateful and terrifying ways. The synopsis reads: “Tensions flare in the near future aboard the International Space Station as a worldwide conflict breaks out on Earth. Reeling from this, the astronauts receive orders from the ground: take control of the station by any means necessary.”

“It’s such a claustrophobic environment, and I think our understanding of what’s going on in space and what we know of the I.S.S. is actually quite limited. Being in such a small tight space heightens everything and builds the intensity of this film as well,” Ariana tells us.

She also discusses how this role was a new experience for her acting wise and the guidance she received from director Gabriela Cowperthwaite.

Watch the full conversation with Ariana below.

I.S.S. will release in theaters January 19th.
