We were joined on the Popternative show by Ana Gasteyer who stars in the NBC workplace comedy series American Auto which returned for season 2 on January 24. Created by Justin Spitzer (Superstore, The Office), the series follows corporate executives at Payne Motors whose new CEO, Katherine Hastings (Gasteyer), brings leadership and experience to the table but knows nothing about cars.

The cast also includes Harriet Dyer (No Activity, The InBetween), Jon Barinholtz (Superstore, Chicago Party Aunt), Tye White (Greenleaf, NCIS: Los Angeles), X Mayo (The Blackening, The Daily Show), Michael B. Washington (The Boys in the Band, Ratched), and Humphrey Ker (Mythic Quest, Missing Link). Season 2 introduced Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family) with a new guest-star role.

Ana discusses the popularity and appeal of the workplace comedy: “A good workplace is a family, a found family, and it’s a community of individuals who can have all sorts of different perspectives, and on a show like American Auto that I think does deal with so many topical issues, it’s really helpful to have seven diverse voices that are coming together to see all the angles on something, and that makes for good comedy.” She also talks about the various topics and issues the series touches on, as well as her time on Saturday Night Live and what that experience means to her.

Watch the full interview with Ana below.

American Auto airs Tuesdays at 8:30p.m/7:30c on NBC and can be streamed on Peacock.
