Laura Ingalls’ story continues to resonate with audiences through Netflix’s new adaptation of Little House on the Prairie. The family drama, which was renewed for a second season ahead of its July 9 premiere, stars Alice Halsey (Lessons in Chemistry) as the adventurous Laura Ingalls alongside Skywalker Hughes as Mary, Luke Bracey as Charles “Pa” Ingalls, and Crosby Fitzgerald as Caroline “Ma” Ingalls.
We were joined on the Popternative show by Alice Halsey to discuss stepping into the iconic role, the magic of walking onto the Ingalls family set, the close bond formed with her castmates, and why she’s excited to return for Season 2.
For Alice, entering the set of Netflix’s Little House on the Prairie for the first time was like walking straight into Laura Ingalls’ world. She recalls being captivated by the attention to detail, from the Ingalls family home to the personal items tucked beneath Mary and Laura’s bed:
“Being on set for the first time was an insane experience. It really felt like stepping into the books, stepping into the script. I feel like one of my favorite set pieces was the little house. It was so magical being able to see it for the first time. I remember just feeling like there you are, like you’re home, you know? And on the mantle, it says the Ingalls family home. And there’s a trunk under Mary and Laura’s bed. That’s my favorite part of the house because if you open it, there’s a bunch of little trinkets, like Mary and Laura’s things. It kind of takes you back into the past. You feel like you’re looking at it through Laura and Mary’s eyes.”

After the success of Season 1, Alice is excited to return to the prairie for another chapter of Laura Ingalls’ story. With Season 2 now in production, the young actress says reuniting with the cast and crew has been a joyful experience filled with excitement, energy, and plenty of familiar faces.
“I remember when we [found] out that we were going to have a season 2, I freaked out. I was so excited. We got on a Zoom with [everyone] and we were all like, “We get to see each other again. We get to see the Prairie again.” We were all losing our minds. It’s just been so great shooting Season 2. I’ve had a lot of little reunions with people from Season 1 and it’s been really exciting and energetic and everybody’s so glad that we get to come back.”
A strong family dynamic was essential to bringing the Ingalls family to life, and Alice says that connection started long before the series started filming. The cast quickly formed a close bond off screen, helping create the natural chemistry audiences see in the series. “The family bonded really quickly. We didn’t even have to do much. I mean, we did have gettogethers and stuff, we would go to markets and restaurants together just to learn things about each other, but we all really clicked when we met each other. We love each other so much and I think that made it a lot easier to be able to do those big group scenes because we already had that connection there on the surface.”
