We were joined on the Popternative show by Alex Pettyfer to discuss the new action thriller, 5lbs of Pressure. The film premiered in theaters and on demand on March 8th, 2024, and also stars Luke Evans (Good Grief, Nine Perfect Strangers), Rudy Pankow (Outer Banks, Uncharted), Rory Culkin (Under the Banner of Heaven, Columbus), James Oliver Wheatley (Belgravia: The Next Chapter, Burn Country), and Stephanie Leonidas (American Gothic, Defiance).
Written and directed by Phil Allocco (The Truth About Lies), 5lbs of Pressure follows an ex-con (Luke Evans) returning to his neighborhood after serving a 16-year stretch for murder trying to seak forgiveness from his son (Rudy Pankow) who grew up without him, while the bitter, volatile brother of the youth he killed looms in the background. It also follows Mike (Rory Culkin), fed up of doing the bidding of his drug-dealing uncle Leff (Alex Pettyfer), who is desperate to leave his life behind. Eventually, Adam and Mike’s paths cross leading to violence and redemption.
“5 lbs of Pressure is a grounded-based drama of characters that are dealing with serious day-to-day issues and challenges in a world that is very relatable,” Alex says of the film.
Alex also discusses his experience making the film and some of his past projects which have shifted his view on filmmaking: “I directed a movie in 2017 called Backroads, and that really changed my perspective on filmmaking as a whole. I realized that filmmaking is a collaborative experience, and as an actor we come in with a very single mindset, and I have been given thankfully in the last couple of years these opportunities to ether execute produce or produce and collaborate with other great producers and talents.”
