We had a chance to chat with actor and writer Albert Nicholas about his upcoming projects including his role as Jonas Blackfoot in Freeform‘s Motherland: Fort Salem.

How did you get into storytelling and acting?

AN: It was something that was always on my mind from a young age. I often wanted to entertain, but nothing ever materialized until my late teens. I ended up joining this theatre group in my hometown and next thing I knew I was fully immersed in it, sometimes doing three to four shows a year. Looking back, it really came into my life at the right time. It became a much-needed creative and emotional outlet.

What can you tell us about some of your upcoming projects you have worked on?

AN: The next thing you can catch me on is Motherland: Fort Salem. There isn’t much I can say about it, as my episodes haven’t aired yet. However, the people I had the opportunity to work with, both in front and behind the camera, were all amazing and truly just want to bring their story to life as best as they can for the audience. Being part of that is a win in my books.

What’s it like being able to work on projects that are different from each other?

AN: I mean, that’s one of the best parts of the job; a huge reason I was drawn towards this career. I’ve done the 9 to 5 type of work, and it just wasn’t for me. I’m someone who gets bored fast and needs variety in life. Working as an actor has given me that fulfilment. Whether it’s jumping from one show to another, or working for an extended period on a project, no day will ever be the same. That’s the beauty of it. It almost gives me the same feeling as traveling to a new destination. There’s always something new to explore and learn.

What’s your mindset like before you start working on a role? Does it depend on the project?

AN: It does and it doesn’t. In a general sense, no matter the medium, no matter the size of the role, the mindset is always the same: How do I immerse myself into this character to portray it as truthfully as possible and serve the story. By doing so, something hopefully connects with and affects whoever is watching. That being said, depending on the project, different things come into play. Certain roles don’t come as naturally. Some require a ton of research and to learn things I may not be familiar with at all. Some require you to go to dark places. Some have accents. I could go on but I’m sure you get it. The point is every role will most likely require me to pull out different tools/sensibilities.
