We were joined on the Popternative show by Kensington Tallman who voices Riley in Disney and Pixar’s Inside Out 2, the sequel to Inside Out from 2015. In the sequel, we return to the mind of now teenager Riley just as headquarters is undergoing a sudden demolition to make room for brand new emotions. Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust, who’ve long been running a successful operation by all accounts, aren’t sure how to feel when Anxiety shows up, and it looks like she’s not alone. Maya Hawke lends her voice to Anxiety, alongside Amy Poehler as Joy, Phyllis Smith as Sadness, Lewis Black as Anger, Tony Hale as Fear, and Liza Lapira as Disgust.
Inside Out 2 premiered in theaters June 14, and has already crossed $1 billion at the global box office. Designated Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, it currently has an 90% on the Tomatometer
In our interview, Kensington tells us about the audition process for Riley which contained several steps:
“It was a very unique process from audition to final product. It took 2 years. I auditioned at 13 and I submitted a little video from my closet in my room and I got a call back. From there I heard that I had booked the scratch for Inside Out 2. The scratch is basically when they need a temp vocal to animate, so they’re still tying to figure things out. And I was filming Home Sweet Rome in Rome, Italy at the time, and I flew from Rome to New York City for 24 hours and recorded the scratch for Inside Out 2, and then about a month later I heard that I got the role of Riley. And starting in January 2023, I officially started recording, and it has been such an amazing experience.”
